Demonstrations in Thailand

Thousands of Thai protesters are demonstating inside Bangkok’s government compound. They say they will stay until the government resigns.

The PAD began their massive demonstrations some days ago demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and his cabinet.

Samak’s position looks fragile. Army commander General Anupong Paochinda has rejected his request to declare a state of emergency, and the Chart Thai Party, a member of Samak’s six-party coalition, said it was ready to suggest the Prime Minister step down.

Thailand’s prime minister declared a state of emergency in the capital Bangkok today, Tuesday, after a week of political tension exploded into violent street clashes between supporters and opponents of the government that left one person dead.

Samak gave no timeframe for how long the emergency decree would stay in effect but said it would be over “moderately quickly.”
