A copy of the Magna Carta manuscript dating back to the 13th century has sold for £10.6m at an auction at Sotheby’s in New York to an American businessman.

This copy of the Magna Carta is one of only 17 existing copies of the iconic 800-year-old English royal manuscript.

Magna Carta was the most significant early influence on the extensive historical process that led to the rule of constitutional law today.

The 1217 issue of the Magna Carta, sent to Oxfordshire, with the remaining seal of William Marshal is displayed in the Divinity School of the Bodleian Library, 11 December 2007 .
